Beginning in the early eighties decade in Kingston Jamaica, this music emerged from a shift to the dominance of traditional reggae. First, it was defined by selectors toasting over reggae riddims, soon evolving into a unique blend of synthesized sounds, infectious beats, and frequently raw lyrics.
